Tales from a happy house.

Undeterred by work tiredness, school tiredness, coughs, colds, sore arms from boosters and constantly lingering Covid worries, we have been busy squeezing every last drop of joy out of December. The month started very strongly with a trip to London to meet up with my book group friends. I was particularly excited about the journey: two hours each way with a book, a magazine, a coffee and my crochet and - crucially - no-one talking to me. Bliss. I needed to save my chatting energy for the friends I was meeting. We started our book group in May 2020 in the first lockdow ..read more

November, gone in a blink.
Tales from a happy house.

November highlights: Bonfire night, with fireworks and parkin. Picking dahlias from the garden right through November. The plants look awful as the leaves die off but they are still producing beautiful flowers. My current book club read. I am enjoying it, but I am also desperate to finish it because it is almost December and it is time to pile up the Christmas themed books beside my bed Whippets scampering across sandy beaches.  Craft projects that keep you going when life is exhausting. I have recently bought both pattern and yarn for a pair of socks, a jumper and a scarf, an ..read more

A Break
Tales from a happy house.

Two weeks ago this weekend, John and I spent a very nice weekend in London with our friends. Children and dog spent the weekend at the luxury five star accommodation that is my parents' house where they were all completely spoiled and had a wonderful time, while John and I enjoyed some child free time doing the kind of things the children don't always want to do, like visit art galleries. We arrived Friday evening, straight from work and, after dropping off bags at the hotel and a quick change of clothes, met up with our friends for a drink then went a wonderful meal here. Endings and Begings
Tales from a happy house.

I have been trying to put this post together for a couple of weeks. It was going to be all about the end of August, those last long days of the holiday, but then life took over, and that feels like a long time ago now.  The last weeks of the summer break were slow for a couple of reasons: my sore back (which is much better now) prevented me from doing jobs I wanted to do, like decorating, and coffees and dinners and all sorts of social things were cancelled by covid or people isolating. To be honest it was relief when the holidays ended and we could just get back to some ..read more

Mid-August
Tales from a happy house.

Hello! I hope you are well and enjoying the holidays. I'd say enjoying the weather, but if you're in the UK then you'll know that this August's weather has been typically unreliable - more grey days than sunny ones, and certainly not warm enough for beach days or sea swimming, But, we have been out and about and making the most of our local area.  A few highlights from the second and third weeks of the school holidays: Watching the hedgerows inch towards early autumn. The blackberries are later this year than last but they are coming. Walking through our local countryside wi ..read more

Cookery Book: Magnolia Table, Volume 2
Tales from a happy house.

It's been just over a year since my last Cookery Calendar Challenge post, but I still love my cookery books as much as ever and use them constantly. One of my favourite things to do is sit down with a coffee, pen and paper, and write a shopping list of ingredients for things I want to cook. I do this as often as time allows. Over the last year I have acquired a few new cookery books, mostly for Christmas or birthday, and last Christmas John gave me Magnolia Table: Volume 2, knowing how much I liked and use the first volume. In fact, it was my last post about a co ..read more

The First Two Weeks of the Holidays
Tales from a happy house.

The six week summer holidays always seems such a long time, but sitting down and looking at these photos reminds me that we are already two thirds of the way through. I'm OK with that though, we have packed a lot in. John has taken annual leave over the last two weeks (we were supposed to be in France) so that's made it feel even more like a break. I spent a couple of days during the first week in school, getting some things ready in my new classroom, sorting out cupboards and corners, making wall displays. I made some bunting for my book corner (which has a travel theme) from an ..read more

A New Shed
Tales from a happy house.

After four months, and a lot of digging, shoveling and painting, we have a new shed in place in the back garden and I love it. You may remember that, back in the Easter holidays, we cleared this area in the corner of the back garden. It had previously housed the trampoline, well hidden from the house by the two huge New Zealand flax plants. Before we did anything else, John and my dad removed the huge tree stump. Then we removed the two New Zealand flax plants which had grown to about ten feet tall and just as wide. Next, John and I painted the fences in the corner to protect t ..read more

July Highlights
Tales from a happy house.

Hello! Such a lot has happened since I was last here, these July weeks have been absolutely frantic. A feel as though I am racing to keep up with the days and weeks at the moment. But here is a selection of July's highlights, a whirlwind tour of life over the last few weeks. I finished my teacher training course and now have qualified teacher status. A PGCE is no small undertaking and covid really did not help matters but not only did I do it, I also enjoyed it. No-one is more surprised than me. We celebrated with flowers, burgers and cocktails and I am really excited to s ..read more

Granny Square Crochet Top
Tales from a happy house.
by

I have finished a crochet top and I think it might be my favourite thing I have ever made. 67 granny squares (plus 15 half squares and 2 three quarter squares) joined together with a white border and all the summery colours in between.  The colours are pretty bright, much brighter than I would usually choose, but I think they work with the balance of white overall. I feel like if I was the kind of person who liked camping and went to festivals, this it what I would wear. As it is, I wear it to Waitrose, and that's fine.  The pattern is the Oma Goodness top by&n ..read more
