The Paris Olympics opening ceremony had it all, and people are... processing. The ceremony, billed as one of the most ambitious ever, featured a parade of boats along the Seine, with a series of fun and quirky shows along the banks as well as some prerecorded segments. It replaced the typical format of a parade of nations inside a stadium. Athletes, some wearing ponchos over their uniforms, kept their spirits high despite rainy weather, waving from their boats.  Lady Gaga stunned with a very va-va-voom rendition of Zizi Jeanmaire’s Mon Truc En Plumes on a set of stairs by the river, surr ..read more

Celine Dion brought the Paris Olympics opening ceremony to a magnificent end with her first performance since announcing her diagnosis of a rare neurological disorder in 2022. Dressed in a glittery silver gown, she delivered a stirring rendition of L’hymne à l’amour, co-written and famously performed by French singer Édith Piaf, on a platform partway up the lighted Eiffel Tower and beneath glowing Olympic rings. She was accompanied by a pianist. Immediately after the performance, Kelly Clarkson, one of NBC’s commentators, choked up and teary, said, “I actually can’t talk.” “People don’t ..read more

The cast of Friends pictured together in 1994 Lisa Kudrow may have hated filming the opening credits sequence for Friends even more than hearing the studio audience laugh too long. During an interview on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, the actor reminisced about the late Matthew Perry, spurring her to tell a hilarious and bittersweet story about her former co-star — and how their show’s now-iconic opening could be viewed as an homage to him. “Honest to God, shooting those titles in the fountain was a nightmare,” Lisa said, before going on to explain that the seri ..read more

When my period tracker app told me I was 365 days late, I took a screenshot. It was official. Today, according to the medical definition, was my Menopause Day. Tomorrow, I would be in post-menopause. The past few years, perimenopause. But today. This was something. Wasn’t it?  I stared at my phone, waiting for the app to register the occasion. An explosion of fireworks across the screen? A crown emoji? Maybe that pink box (period just started!) would turn gold and chime, signifying Next Level. I was crossing a threshold. This was significant. Something to celebrate, right?  The sc ..read more

Layton Williams at the Gay Times Honours in 2022 Layton Williams is not impressed. The “great British summer” is “great British summer”-ing, and he’s having to take a taxi from the train station to the theatre where he’s currently performing to avoid the torrential rain. “I was literally on a Lime bike, topless, cycling to the theatre last week, because the sun was beaming outside,” he says (“there’s no shame here, I worked hard for this body – so it’s getting out and it’s getting tanned,” he adds, as an aside). “But now look where we are,” he notes, turning his attention back to the rain. “M ..read more

Habits like bad posture, excessive gum chewing and biting your nails can all lead to jaw health issues. When it comes to well-being, your jaw health likely isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, experts say many day-to-day issues — everything from headaches to ear pain — can be a sign of jaw problems.  “First and foremost, jaw joints are the most-used joint in the body,” said Dr. Priya Mistry, a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dentist in Washington state, who added that we even use our jaw when we sleep. “The simple act of swallowing makes our jaw move,” Mistry said ..read more

The author and his family pose in Raleigh, North Carolina, in June 2023. As a gay man, I’ve managed to escape a lot of the homophobia that afflicted many of my peers who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s. I started coming out at 14, in an Asian American enclave in Silicon Valley. Though it wasn’t the gayest place one could grow up, I felt reasonably safe coming out and never felt particular pressure to perform or mask my identity. This continued into college in New York City and well into my adult life in Raleigh, North Carolina, where I now live. I always felt I could be openly gay and never fear ..read more
