Hello friends! It's October already! I know I am not the only one to sense how just a change of the calendar can make you feel like a new start. But the days themselves have changed as well. Cooler mornings, shorter days, and that brilliant fall harvest moon! I hope you make a point of getting out into the darkness and looking up at that brilliant orb before it is gone for the month. It also feels like a little celebration to me when the brown transferware gets its day in the sun again. I appreciate it all year long of course, but autumn always feels like its rightful place in ..read more

Happy June Days

Hello friends! I hope this finds you enjoying these early days of a new summer. I have already had a nice cool morning walk in the open fields near my house today. I'm finding it hard to do much indoors these days.  I am also having a time of it getting back into the blogging groove and relearning much of it. I had a bit of comedy of errors messing around with editing old posts this morning. My advise: just don't do it! Haha. It's finally picnic time again, and we enjoyed an impromptu gathering in the yard on Memorial Day, and another big family gathering same weekend with ..read more

Roses and Other Garden Friends
Cabin & Cottage

Like people, roses are a varied and complex species. I have a friend in California whose bushes number in the hundreds!  But I only have a few varieties of tea roses and three David Austin bushes. Two are Litchfield Angel, which you see here. I think they must be pretty hardy, and they are certainly prolific. I love the informal "loose" look of the blooms. (And, of course, the creamy white color!) This particular variety has a droopy stem. They almost look better to me in a vase than on the bush! But for a brief spring moment the bush itself can look quite spectacular in f ..read more

Well, hello again friends! What a delight to see that a few of you have found me back already! Crazy thrilled to get a few comments. Haha, but not kidding! So sweet of you to give me the kindness of knowing that you are visiting. It's been a bit of an exercise getting everything working on the blog again. And of course I don't mean "everything"!  Number one (as Ruby Thewes would say in her southern accent), I forgot how much blinking time it takes to get something posted up when you take photos. Number two, I am reminded that I don't really have fancy (or working) equipment (or skil ..read more

Hello Friends! Welcome back! It has been just over a year since I last shared something here on the blog. It doesn't seem that it has been so long to me. So many of you have been kind enough to message me to let me know that you missed me posting here. You have my deep thanks for your appreciation and encouragement. Starting up again feels much like it did in the very beginning, but my world and the online community have both vastly changed since those days many years ago.  I have continued doing the easier thing by posting on Facebook and Instagram during the interim ..read more

Fooled By April

Hello friends! Another month has slipped by. Happy April Fools Day!  Nobody knows how the tradition started, but maybe it was the weather. Every day in April seems to surprise with drastic changes in temperature even in one day. Tricked by either by going out with short sleeves on a lovely warm morning only to be freezing by the afternoon, or the opposite: dressing too warm on a cool morning and sweltering by 5:00. At least that's how it happens here in Albuquerque!  But I do love the layers of spring whether it's in the choice of clothing or in the unfolding o ..read more

Nearly Blooming

Hello Friends! I thought I would creep in during these few quiet days of the waning season and share a thought or two with you. I am feeling the pleasure of seeing a few successful bulbs come to bloom in my east window after a few weeks of minimal effort. As much as I enjoy being surrounded by green and growing things, one could not say that I have much of a talent or lifestyle for it. Number one, I'm not very attentive. Secondly, I don't think that I have room for many plants inside. And three, I don't have much patience for plants past their prime, though I have been known to ..read more

As It Comes

Season's greetings friends! I just got back from a few days travel, so I'm shuttering out (literally!) the busy world for a bit. Lit a fire, and put on the softest Christmas background music you can imagine. I wish you could hear it with me. I'm loving the interlude after visiting the big city which felt like a futuristic movie to me. Glad to be back to my own cozy corners. It's my year for enjoying other people's decorating (which I am, immensely), and taking a backseat from the flurry. I'm always more into the creature comforts anyway. One of which is this fantastic treat ..read more

Old Traditions

Seasons Greetings friends! I finally pulled out the decorations and got my mantel dressed the way I want it. Things always get worse before they get better, but most of the overflow has been (mostly) tucked away. There were more decisions than I wanted to make this year. But I went easy on myself and the whole first part of the week disappeared into fiddling with Christmas's past to the backdrop of good movies and music.  I have my favorites, as we all do, that reappear almost every year. But it's always fun to add something new. I'm always on the lookout for something vintage and ..read more

Preparing the Christmas Hearth

Hello friends! It seems like time to get my fireplace hearth and mantel ready for colder weather. As I was out walking yesterday, I thought what a lovely warm fall day it felt like. But it's the first week of December!  I think temps are dropping a bit in Albuquerque this week, so I will be thinking of starting a fire soon. Nothing makes the Christmas season cozier. Years ago we covered the fireplace opening with an easily removable plywood and tin tile insert. The surround is black metal with glass doors that looks fine while a fire is going, but not so great otherwise. During ..read more
