There are very few of us who are at the top of an organization. We all find ourselves in various positions of authority. There are people below us. Then, there are people above us. There’s a desire to continue our upward advancement. We want to show the leaders above us that we have what it takes to sit alongside them. We want to be able to lead up. Photo by Cristina Gottardi on Unsplash The question becomes: how do we lead those who are leading us? It’s the struggle we all have throughout our careers. I want to let you know there’s good news. We can lead up and not just down. We can impact ..read more

We’ve all heard about the myth of the bull in a China shop. It’s not true (bulls in a China shop are actually very careful not to damage things -check out the video at the end of this article to see a bull in a China shop-type situation), but it provides a great illustration. When you think of a bull in a China shop, you think of chaos, damage, mass destruction. A bull has a lot of force behind it. So do you. As the leader of an organization, you get to point the organization in the right direction. Photo by Marcel Strauß on Unsplash But what happens when you’re new to an organization ..read more

Recently, I listened to Martha Stout’s book The Sociopath Next Door. It discusses how we can recognize the traits of sociopaths in our lives. Once we identify them, we can begin to act appropriately toward them. Stout discusses the situation of a young girl on a bus. She sees one of her classmates picking on another student. This student is differently abled.  The young girl could have kept silent. She didn’t. She spoke up, told the bully he’s not being nice, and changed the course of the bullied child’s day. A Reel Leadership Article My latest book, Reel Leadership, is now available on Amazon. If you love movies and leadership, you will love this book. With two entries into the A Quiet Place series (Part One and Part Two), I didn’t think we needed another entry. The more we read, the more we can understand others and the trials they’ve gone through. It’s an amazing thing people are willing to share their experiences with us so we can grow more quickly than they did. It’s one of the reasons I love reading or listening to books. It propels my growth. This month, we’re going to look at another round of books to help you grow mentally, spiritually, and in your leadership. The Redeem Mi Run recently happened in Montague, Michigan. The purpose of the run was to help raise funds to redeem the land which had been polluted, neglected, and abused.  Redeem Mi Land, an organization dedicated to the abovementioned goals, put on the event, which was their first and a great success.  Photo by Jean-Frederic Fortier on Unsplash I was asked to be a part of this race. First, I was asked to find where to rent the start/finish line equipment. Second, I was asked to man a water/aid station at the 5K turnaround point. One of the things I had to do for the aid station ..read more

Quotes And Leadership Lessons From Wicked The Musical

This edition of Reel Leadership is different. Instead of hitting on one of the latest films to hit theaters, we’re going to look at a musical theater play. When I ran the London Marathon, I had the opportunity to visit the Apollo Victoria Theatre London. It is home to the musical Wicked. Wicked tells the story of The Wizard Of Oz but with a twist. The play explores the backstory of the Wicked Witch Of The West, Elphaba Thropp. She was born different, her skin a hue of green, and everyone seemed to be afraid of her. This sets up an excellent chance to explore the themes of leadership. Wicked c ..read more
