hubby and i are considering reserving here for an upcoming dinner in a few weeks. 25 west 28th (broadway) the blurb below is from the nytimes. website —— The chef and restaurateur José Andrés’s Bazaar rubric has permitted him to explore many possibilities: tapas, Spanish fare and twists on American dishes like cheesesteak in Washington; a beefier menu at Bazaar Meat in Chicago and Las Vegas; and now in New York, a meeting of Spain and Japan. In addition to cooking for millions in disaster areas and writing several cookbooks, Mr. Andrés has found the time to research the 17th-century voyage of ..read more

Joomak Banjum

Joomak Banjum (on Fifth Ave. just below 32nd St.) is yet another entry in the cheffed-up-ethnic-by-credentialed-ethnic-chef derby.  If LittleMäd is Korean-inflected French, Joomak Banjum is (or at least much of it is) French-inflected Sichuan Chinese with Korean ingredients.  It's weird what people will think of. The chef, and much of the staff, comes out of The Modern, from which they were laid off during The Lockdown.  I shared Adrian's fear that the The Reopening would involve a further consolidation of the restaurant industry into big well-capitalized corporate groups.  ..read more

CheLi

CheLi is a new Shanghainese place from the people behind Szechuan Mountain House.  It occupies the other end of the terrace that Szechuan Mountain House's Manhattan branch is on, on St. Marks. CheLi purports to go deeper into Shanghainese cuisine than the places we already know here.  It also purports to offer dishes newly created by its chef.  And certainly you don't see on its menu a lot of the brown-sauce braises that dominate at other Shanghainese places (not, God knows, that there's anything wrong with brown-sauce braises). But what's important is that food -- right no ..read more

LittleMäd (on Madison between 29th & 30th) is a new entry in the credentialed-chef-cheffing-up-the-food-of-their-ethnicity genre.  It's run by a chef of Korean descent who comes out of the kitchen at Le Coucou.  (The restaurant is backed by the reliable Hand Hospitality group.) It's billed as French-inflected Korean -- but it's really Korean-inflected French. An excellent appetizer, Pyeonyuk Torchon, tells the tale.  It's a fairly classic head cheese torchon -- but made with/flavored like pyeonyuk, the Korean cold cut made from meat scraps (including head). The technical sta ..read more

Okume - Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Went to this very interesting place today, having read about it a while ago, and finally having a reason to get there. Okume, at 50 Norman, is where I'd previously encountered a Nordic restaurant/shop called, yes...Norman.  Okume is actually one of 3 shops sharing this one address. Citone is a "lifestyle" shop, or what I call housewares/kitchenware. Fancy stuff. Designer stuff. $75 soy sauce dipping bowl stuff. House Brooklyn - a small, intimate little restaurant, serving a 9-course tasting menu. The third shop is Okume.  It's where I had this for lunch: Japanese SET ..read more

My friend just moved to Borough Park, in the very Chinese area (around 11th and 59th I think she said). She knows there's a lot of good Chinese food in the area, but she's not really interested in Chinese food at the moment (background, she's from msp but has a HKG Chinese spouse and lived in HKG for 13 years, just moving back to the US in 2020 or 2019.  Spouse is now a pastor at a church in borough park, so they are deeply ensconced in the Chinese community).       What other kind of interesting places can she explore? Any French bakeries in the area? When we were in ..read more

The New York Bagel: Searching for the Best

In my continuing endeavor to find a reasonably good bagel, I made it here yesterday...     While they're still not, I don't know, my Proustian ideal, the 2 that I've tried have been quite good. Too large, of course, but a nice crust and good, not too sweet crumb. I did, while I was there, get one (pump) with cream cheese to eat in the car, and they're really good fresh. This morning's toasted was not as wonderful.   Next up, per splinky's recommend, Utopia Bagels. And I think there's one on Queens Blvd., maybe in Kew Gardens? oasis bagels didn't used to be too larg ..read more

I'm behind in my write-ups, so it'll take me a little while to get to this new French place (on Sullivan St. between Bleecker and Houston), which I adored.   I'm posting because, if Orik is still in New York, I want to hear what he thinks of it ..read more
