Alaska Bears & Wolves

As a continuation of my last post, this past June I guided a documentary film crew on the border of Lake Clark National Park in Chinitna Bay, near the Natural Habitat Bear Camp. In addition to the amazing mating season behaviors that I photographed and displayed on my previous post, I was delighted to be sharing the sedge meadow with not only beautiful bears, but about 16 tundra swans. I have seen swans many times in the past, but never this close to bears. Take a look….. Just like the bears, these swans form mating couples and congregate on intertidal meadows to feed on protein-packed sedges ..read more

Coastal Grizzly Mating Season Highlights 2022- Lake Clark, Alaska
Alaska Bears & Wolves

In June last summer I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to guide a nature documentary film crew at a remote, private camp on the border of Lake Clark National Park, where Natural Habitat runs its Bear Camp. The weather along the coast was exceptionally dry, and in many areas the sedge grasses, which the bears feed on in June were struggling. In our meadow, however, which was constantly fed by glacial meltwater from Iliamna Volcano, remained verdant and attracted many hungry females, and in turn giant males that wanted to mate with them. Although mothers and cubs rarely visit this area i ..read more

Borneo Highlights- October 2022 Night Photography
Alaska Bears & Wolves

Last month I guided yet another fantastic Natural Habitat Adventures expedition on the wild and exotic island of Borneo. Below I will share highlights of wildlife photographed at night. I never use a flash when photographing wildlife, because I believe it too intense for the animal, and is also disruptive for non photographers, or people shooting video. Instead we use low intensity LED lights, and operate our cameras to utilize techniques to maximize low light gathering. This type of photography is not easy, but I love the results, and feel that we minimally disturb the wildlife. Thanks guy fo ..read more

On this latest Natural Habitat Adventures Borneo Expedition we had an amazing encounter with a young, adventurous male orangutan while hiking in the Danum Valley, while staying at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Anyone with experience with wild orangutans will tell you that do not like water, and do not wade or swim in rivers, streams or lakes. This male proved this rule wrong! We couldn’t believe it! Check it out This was just one of many exceptional highlights from an amazing expedition in Borneo! Stay tuned for more ..read more

Alaska Bears & Wolves

It was another incredible September for bear photography on the Katmai Coast. The fish run was poor due to low numbers of chum and pink salmon, but there was enough to keep the bears well fed and busy. Here are some image highlights. I love September for the low angle sunlight, the bears look so beautiful with their winter coats, and the fall foliage adds mood and color to the backgrounds. Keep Exploring! Brad ..read more

Funny Backscratching Bear Videos- Alaska
Alaska Bears & Wolves

What an amazing it has been guiding expeditions for Natural Habitat in Alaska. Before my season began I got to spend some time near Lake Clark National Park during the peak of mating season. Here are two videos I filmed of bears scratching on trees. Bears certainly do itch in the summer, as they lose their winter fur, which explains the first video. The second video shows a giant dominant male bear marking a special scratching tree that is used to assert dominance. In brown bear mating season, males must compete with a limited number of females since many females are raising cubs and not avail ..read more

Check out this video of me on the banks of a salmon stream explaining how bears keep salmon streams healthy by cleaning up dead post-spawned salmon, and recycling the marine nitrogen into the terrestrial ecosystem. Filmed while guiding expedition for Natural Habitat Adventures on the Katmai Coast. Check out this post I did years ago, explaining in more detail the role bears play in salmon run health- “Of Bears and Salmon, the Vital Connection ..read more

The major draw to our super popular Borneo Expeditions is and will always be viewing orangutans, which share 97% of our DNA. These charismatic, incredibly intelligent and highly endangered great apes are on the bucket list of nearly every wildlife lover. Our expeditions to this highly diverse, third largest island in the world were put on hold since 2019 due to the Corona pandemic. It was a huge thrill to lead the first post-covid expedition in early August 2022. Here are my image highlights of orangutans from this expedition. This past expedition to Borneo was fantastic, and we did have a num ..read more

As a continuation of my last post, showing images of birds, this one will show mammal highlights from my last Natural Habitat Advenrures Borneo expedition, but I will save orangutans for their own separate post . The big draw to this trip are the orangutans, which never disappoint, but there is so much more…. Borneo is home to 222 species of mammals, 22 of which are endemic. Here are my best non-orang mammal images from this past trip. Stay tuned for everybody’s favorite, Orangutans, in my next post. Thanks Guys, Keep Exploring, Brad ..read more
