Memorial Day Tribute: Honoring Our Merchant Marine Heroes
Faith for Living
by Dr. Michael Milton
4M ago
They came from all over this great Land of ours. Some officers were distinguished leaders from the nation’s finest universities. Before WWII, many officers had graduated from Maritime Officer Academies, such as my father’s alma mater in New London, Connecticut. This academy was later amalgamated into the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The men were able seamen, having sailed the seven seas and faced the most frightening experiences of the raw elements unleashed on the vast oceanic prairies. Yet nothing could prepare these intrepid patriots for what lay ahead. The ..read more

“Moses Breaking the Tablets of the Law (Exodus 32:19).” Gustave Doré (1832–1883) This is my latest opinion article. It was published by Carolina Journal, a think tank publication of the John Locke Society: “Our Economic Crisis is Also a Moral One:” https://www.carolinajournal.com/opinion/our-economic-crisis-is-also-a-moral-one/ “The crux of the matter extends beyond discussions of inflation, the World Bank, and intricate monetary policies designed to prolong the inevitable. It boils down to every individual’s fundamental choice: “Will you serve God or mammon?” A shift towards gratit ..read more

A Little Epistle to My Pastoral Care and Counseling Students on Deep Learning (and a link to a re-usable “product” for the Spiritual Diagnostic Model)
Faith for Living
by Dr. Michael Milton

My Beloved Students in the Gospel, What an honor and joy to serve you as you prepare for a life of pastoral care and counseling. You will see a world I will not. You will minister Christ deep into the twenty-first century. Therefore, I must pray all the more for you. My theme verse for supporting you in this mission of teaching and learning is from Paul’s deeply moving words to the Thessalonians: “For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? For you are our glory and joy ..read more

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). After a time of prayer for my seminary students this morning, I composed this letter and offered this prayer. I trust and pray it might be of some Spirit-shaped use to you in your life. My Beloved Students Called to Proclaim the Unsearchable Riches of Christ: “Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Timothy 1:2 KJV).  On this first day of a new week, the day after Transfiguration Sunday, as the Church winds its way thr ..read more

Gradually and Suddenly: Becoming the Preacher as Poet Declaring Theology as Wonder
Faith for Living

Milton Dictating “Paradise Lost” to his Daughters, 1878. Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900). Hungarian National Gallery. Some letters should be shared. This one was written for students in preaching. Yet, I thought that the message might have a broader usefulness. All believers are called to announce the Gospel in our stations of life. Thus, it is imperative to recognize the profound challenges and responsibilities that accompany this calling. So I determined that this letter is not solely for aspiring preachers, but for anyone committed to being a beacon of hope, love, and faith. The task of deliver ..read more

St. Peter in Prison (The Apostle Peter Kneeling), 1631. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669). The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Beauty beckons from the doorsteps of our imagination. The image of God, present in man but distorted by sin, nevertheless remains as the Sensus divinitatis, a vestigial witness to the great I AM. Repentance and faith in the crucified, resurrected, ascended, reigning, and soon-returning Christ are instruments to bring about justification before the Almighty. The Holy Spirit baptizes us into Christ (He is our head, we, His Body), resides within us, giving “union with ..read more

The First Christmas I Remember
Faith for Living
by Dr. Michael Milton

I looked around the room. It was the same room I had always known, “always” in a five-year-old boy’s life. There was a four-poster bed and plenty of quilts with patchwork designs that became a muse to think about the intricate world that lay just beyond the door and the front porch. At the foot of the bed was a cedar chest (that my wife has to this day). My Uncle had built it for Aunt Eva on their wedding day in the dawning years of the twentieth century. There was a Zenith television, old, round, and unreliable, a curmudgeonly thing purchased when Aunt Eva’s husband was alive (“Uncle John” w ..read more
