Lightning in a jar. Those moments when the spine tingles and the adrenalin flows

We’re nearly there. The international football is over (for now) even though the break isn’t, so for one final time (also for now), we return to our Ed for some retro thoughts on those magical moments that make football so special. Usual rules apply … this piece was written in 2013, so please bear in mind we have over a decade’s worth of golden moments that can be added to those mentioned below by Ed. Feel free to share yours in the comments below. *** One of the things that I truly love about football is those goose pimple-inducing incidents that seem to freeze time in their occurrence and pa ..read more

NORWICH CITY WOMEN: Showpiece Carrow Road match ends level

The day was finally here. Almost 6,000 fans packed into the home of City to see the women grace the hallowed turf once again, this time against Queen’s Park Rangers in the National League Division One South East. Preparation for the fixture had been underway for months, ensuring the club did everything possible to put on a show for their biggest crowd of the season. Before kick-off, the women’s team received more good news, as the club announced that further funding would be granted to the long-term plans of the side due to the sale of shares held by the Norwich City Football Club Appeal Fund ..read more

A legend, a nearly man, and a bloke with plenty to say. Take your pick

It’s been that bizarre time of the year again. Just as the season is approaching its climax, there is an enforced break while international teams play a series of largely meaningless matches. For me, it was particularly badly planned. A lack of recent match reports will tell you that I missed those games due to work. This week I was free, but no match to watch. I can’t have been the only one to have breathed a sigh of relief when Josh Sargent and Grant Hanley withdrew from the USA and Scottish squads respectively. Nor the only one on tenterhooks after reports that Marcelino ..read more

Another tale… this one of two sporting directors

As interminably annoying as international breaks are, they do at least offer the time and space to take stock of where we are, how we got there, and what the possibilities are going forward. Handy really when you have Norwich City-related web pages to fill and no domestic matches to write about, albeit a certain former sporting director did his best to offer up a talking point (more on that later). For all Championship, international breaks also offer respite from the breathless Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday grind that seems to intensify in the second half of the season and buys time for those p ..read more

ACADEMY: Greater consistency has equated to more points for Under-18s
My Football Writer | Norwich City Football News

Since the start of the new year, the U18s have picked up seven points from seven games in the league – a vast improvement compared to the first half of the season where they managed just one win. Their two wins in January and February came against Leicester and Aston Villa and were both away from home.    Despite the U18s having a few positive results since the start of the new year, they have also suffered some heavy defeats with West Ham and Fulham both recently putting five past them. However, the U18s managed to gain a positive result in the return fixture with Fulham, drawing 0 ..read more

No such thing as a bad pro … but for some it just doesn’t work out

It’s going to be a long fortnight. Mid-season international breaks are veritable nightmares for editors of football websites that stick to the domestic scene. Even more so when there is no imminent transfer window. So, to an old friend I’ve turned, who has kindly given us the nod to resurrect some of his classic columns of yesteryear. Therefore, I give you Ed Couzens-Lake’s 2013 take on NCFC players of the past who should have but didn’t make the grade … at least not in a yellow shirt. *(With Ed’s permission, some references have been updated to make them 2024-friendly). *** One of my favourit ..read more

Respect to Wagner. It’s not just the turnaround… it’s the scale of it

To fully grasp the scale of this revival, it’s worth revisiting what was effectively its starting point. If you’re feeling brave, transport yourself back to around 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 5. No fireworks. Only damp squibs. We had just been humped 3-1 at home by Blackburn despite playing against ten for 40 minutes. It was live on Sky. Carrow Road echoed only to the sound of boos (it wasn’t to be the first time), and there were very loud calls for “the board”, Webber and Wagner to go. As ever, I blundered in with my thoughts the next morning and embraced the spirit of the Moody Blues. Our fr ..read more

The Preview – Stoke City v Norwich City

Here we go. Assuming City can maintain their performance levels at home, our end-of-season fate will come down to whether we improve them on the road. For half an hour at Middlesbrough, the answer seemed to be a clear yes. Then … well, there’s been plenty enough said about all that. If anyone’s in doubt about the home-and-away contrast, recent stats paint a stark picture. In our last four home games, we’ve scored 14 and conceded 3. In the last four away games – no more difficult on paper – we’ve scored 4 and conceded 7.  Across the season, our home record is now the third-best in the divi ..read more

ACADEMY: U21s rediscovering their form at the right time
My Football Writer | Norwich City Football News

The U21s conjured up a fantastic 2-0 away win against Leeds in PL2 last Friday, rising to 14th in the table – three points clear of the last qualification place. Not only was it a massive result from a league-standing perspective, but it was also instrumental from a rhythm aspect as they had been winless in 2024. On Monday night, the U21s managed to back up the positive result at Leeds with another win – this time at The Walks where they beat King’s Lynn U23s 2-0 in the quarter-final of the Norfolk Senior Cup.  A big positive from both games was the consecutive clean sheets, with keeper E ..read more

Will 15 points from 27 be enough to secure City sixth place?

The dreaded run-in. We have been here before. Many times. Promotion battles are something the Canary faithful have become accustomed to. The final throes of season 2023-24 loom.  City have nine games left to cement a playoff place. Unfinished business. The last thing anyone of a yellow and green persuasion wants is another late-season collapse. From the 27 points available at this same stage last season, City managed just six, which resulted in a 13th-place finish and a bitter taste in the mouth.  Norwich were seventh this time last season – nine games left – ahead of an away game ag ..read more
