4 Nations Update: Hope Dubas & Co Are Paying Attention

As the Penguins’ brass prepares to embark on a retool in earnest, I hope they were paying attention to Thursday night’s rousing 4 Nations tilt between the United States and Finland. The players who made the most impact (literally) for the victorious United States squad weren’t necessarily the high-skill guys like Auston Matthews and Jack Hughes. Rather, they were the Tkachuk brothers, Brady and Matthew, who combined for four goals, five points, a whopping 13 shots on goal and 10 hits! “That’s their game,” teammate J.T. Miller said. “They play that old-school brand and they can do everyth ..read more

Ex-Penguins Update: 4 Nations Break

by Rick Buker

With the 4 Nations Faceoff upon us, I thought it would be an ideal time to check in on ex-Penguins around the league. The leader of the expatriate pack should come as no surprise. Indeed, with 27 goals and 54 points, Jake Guentzel has picked up with the Lightning pretty much where he left off in the ‘burgh. That is, scoring at a 40-goal clip. Hard not to wonder what the team would look like if we’d kept Jake and signed him to an extension, but that’s water well under the Fort Pitt Bridge and down the Ohio at this stage. Since departing in the Erik Karlsson swap two summers ago, runner-up Mika ..read more

Penguins Swing Minor Deal

In a swap of minor-league forwards, the Penguins dealt Corey Andonovski to the Blues for Mathias Lafferierre. Although the trade doesn’t figure to impact the big-league roster (at least ours), it continues an all-too-familiar trend of pushing guys who play with an edge out the door (not too mention players brought on board during the Ron Hextall era). Indeed, the deal comes on the heels of another swap involving a physical Baby Pens forward, Jagger Joshua. While the 25-year-old Andonovski often imitated Mike Lange’s bulldozer in a construction yard (i.e., throwing bone-rattling checks), he to ..read more

4 Nations Update: Sid Shines on Big Stage

I’ll be honest. I wasn’t planning to do any recaps during the 4 Nations Faceoff. Frankly, I’m a little burned-out and intended to take a much-needed break from blogging. Kind of my version of flopping on a beach in Florida. However, life and circumstance have a way of drawing you back in. Such is the case in the wake of Sidney Crosby’s electric three-assist performance last night in Montreal to lead his native Canada to a 4-3 overtime triumph over plucky Team Sweden. Before I focus on Sid, how about the ovation received by former Pens owner and franchise savior Mario Lemieux during the pregam ..read more

Penguins Claim Kolyachonok

The Penguins claimed defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok off waivers yesterday from Utah. A left-shot, the 23-year-old native of Belarus stands 6’2” and tips the scales at a solid 195 pounds. In 23 games with Utah this season, Kolyachonok tallied a pair of goals and five points to go with a minus-7. For his NHL career, spent entirely with Arizona/Utah, the former second-round pick of the Panthers has four goals and 12 points in 62 games along with a minus-2 and 59 hits. Despite the modest hit totals, he plays with an edge and is tough along the boards according to early scouting reports. A fast ..read more

Penguins Phall to Philly in Pre-Tourney Phinale

In the wake of the Penguins’ hardscrabble victory over the Rangers on Friday night, I wrote that our current batch reminds me a lot of the 1969-70 squad. Long on heart, short on talent. I still feel that way following last night’s 3-2 loss to the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center. However, there’s one fact I neglected to mention. That vintage Pens team, which finished in second place, actually had a losing record of 26-38-12 (and were shutout a whopping 14 times). In those days, the six 1967 expansion teams were grouped in the West Division, more or less assuring them of at least some level of suc ..read more

Penguins Pull the Plug on Puljujärvi
PenguinPoop.com

The Penguins have placed forward Jesse Puljujärvi on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. Essentially pulling the plug on an experiment that began nearly a year ago to the day (February 4) when the team signed the hulking winger to a two-year deal. The move appears to have transpired with the mutual consent of player and team. Following an outstanding training camp and fast start to the campaign (a goal and five points in six games), including a five-game points streak, Puljujärvi seemed to fall into disfavor over night. A mere four games after his streak ended h ..read more

Pesky Penguins Clip Rangers, 3-2

Way back in 1969-70, a Penguins team that was short on talent but long on heart and soul captured the affection of the city with its gritty, determined play. Led by rookie wonder Michel Brière, rising star Jean Pronovost and a supporting cast of scrappers including Bryan “Bugsy” Watson, Glen “Slats” Sather, Tracy Pratt and Bryan Hextall (Ron’s dad), the “Pesky Pens” incredibly came within two wins of reaching the Stanley Cup Final. After his team was nosed out by Scotty Bowman’s Blues in a fiercely contested Game 6 during the Semi-Finals, Pens coach Red Kelly offered a touching tribute. “You ..read more

Penguins Bulletin: Sid to Miss Rangers Game Tonight

Penguins’ captain Sidney Crosby will miss tonight’s Metro matchup with the Rangers at Madison Square Garden due to a presumed arm injury. Emil Bemström has been recalled from the Pens’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate to take Sid’s place. Acquired last February from the Blue Jackets for a sixth-round pick and Alex Nylander, the 25-year-old Swedish forward is enjoying a banner season for the Baby Pens. He’s amassed 19 goals and 41 points, both team highs, and recently participated in the AHL All-Star Game. In 228 career NHL games spread over five seasons, Bemström’s tallied 34 goals and 74 ..read more

Penguins This ‘n’ ‘At

With a lull between games, I thought I’d cobble together a Penguins This ‘n’ ‘At. Without further ado, here goes. Virtually every Pens fan, if not every hockey fan across the Dominion of Canada, is holding their breath (and saying their prayers) over the status of Sidney Crosby. Sid got his arm caught between a rock and a hard place (Devils Luke Hughes and Erik Haula) on Tuesday night. Although our captain returned to action and even participated in the shootout, he missed practice yesterday while being evaluated for injury. I recall Evgeni Malkin suffering what at first blush appeared to be ..read more
