"If dragons and vampire lords and demon princes don't offer any real danger, what at this point could possibly kill me?"                           --Chester N. Bolingbroke, 1 game hour ago        The answer is: a cockatrice egg. I didn't even know that was a thing. If they existed in 3.0, I don't remember or never encountered one. I'm not sure how I could have told that it wasn't a regular ..read more

Just about every site has the title as one word. There is no support for this on the title screen, box cover, or manual cover, all of which have it as two words.        Shadow Caster United States Raven Software (developer); ORIGIN/Electronic Arts (publisher) Released 1993 for DOS, 1994 for PC-98 Date Started: 16 March 2024               This is one of those games where I appreciate what they're trying to do, and I don't want to discourage them from thinking outside the box, but it's just not for me. NetHack: Beyond this Place of Wrath and Tears

One of the levels of Gehennom, this version's version of Hell.        I was in pretty good shape when I wrapped up the last NetHack session, having just conquered the Castle level, found the Wand of Wishing, and collected almost everything I needed or wanted for my "ascension kit." Before continuing, though, I spent a couple of hours revisiting earlier levels to accomplish some final things:      Commenters suggested that I use my Wand of Wishes for a Bag of Holding. It turns out I didn't need to waste a wish. One of the bags ..read more

I am not going back to these mines again.        To start this session, I wasted a bunch of time going all the way back to the bottom level of the Gnomish Mines, only to fail to find a luckstone or whatever it was I was supposed to find there, despite searching every wall and futilely using my pick-axe at every place that looked like it might have a secret area. I guess it wasn't a complete waste, as I stopped at the temple on my way through the town, donated $6,000 to the priest, and got some intrinsic protection. I also killed and ate a wraith on ..read more

NetHack [3.1]: Quest for Glory

Returning home for the elf quest.           This NetHack session saw me go back to the Gnomish Mines, all the way to the bottom, then back up and down the regular shaft to dungeon Level 18, then back up to to Level 8, then to my "home," then down to Level 5 of a special dungeon where I had a quest for the elves. It took about 6 hours. The total time I have with this character is approaching 10 hours, which is longer than it took me to win the previous versions of Hack and NetHack, which is making me rethink my overall approach to the game.    ..read more

Shadow of Yserbius: The Ghost King

Fighting the ghost of King Cleowyn. Oddly, he doesn't seem to do anything once his companion ghosts are dead.        I was supposed to give up Shadow of Yserbius for this entry but, for whatever reason, I kept on playing. I kept making maps, hitting deadends, going in other directions, and making more maps. As I wrap up this entry, I'm Level 16 and I've explored various parts of 5 dungeon levels, for 20 total maps. The dungeon is structured in multiple interconnected levels with multiple maps per level. The dungeon level isn't necessarily indicati ..read more

I just can't stop drinking from fountains.         After losing Aamanz so stupidly, I took a few days off. When I fired it up again, I created Aaron the Archaeologist (I'm still accepting random characters from the game) who ate a rotted corpse on Level 1 and died before he did anything else of note. Abadan the Samurai followed him, but he died of starvation in a particularly insidious Level 3, on which I could find only a couple of rooms and a long corridor. I know there were secret doors somewhere, but none of my searching could reveal them ..read more
