Summer arrived in style with Shirt.Woot‘s Heatin’ Up derby, which collected shirt designs about all the things we love (or hate!) and associate with summer. Naturally, Snoopy and other pop culture characters are proving especially popular with voters. Here’s a look at two current voting underdogs that I’d like to see get some more attention… Stargazing by superteo make beach crab astronomers stare at sea stars instead of the night sky, much to the sea star’s confusion. Pudgy Mermaids by ilikemooses made me laugh with the sheer pride of the manatee’s expression, clearly very pleased with her m ..read more

Threadless’s Funky Geometry No. 15

Funky Geometry No. 15 by CourtneyKM is my favorite Threadless print this week. I like the way it takes a common style, assembling geometric forms into pleasing arrangements, and gives it a fresh take through eschewing precision in favor of a rougher look. In this piece, nothing is quite symmetrical, and the art revels in its hand drawn nature by using the gaps in its shape’s fills to create texture. The result feels much more dynamic than a typical vector design might, and it also has a softer look that is pleasing and comforting to the eye. I also enjoy the unusual mix of colors, which inclu ..read more

Here’s what caught my eye this week… Best of the Bunch: Hello Clarice by SubBass49 is the rare Hello Kitty parody that actually uses the “hello” as inspiration, and the mix of cute and terrifying works really well. Nicest Surprise: Non-Dairy Queen by AcraigL gives the dairy-free an iconic way to broadcast their preference. Shirt I Am Most Biased About: My design Vintage Copacabana takes its cues from a classic song and gives the hotspot a retr ..read more

Pampling’s Meanwhile in Tokyo

Meanwhile in Tokyo by Graja takes an ordinary weather forecast and turns it into something fantastic. Each of the first three icons is a typical depiction, with rain, snow, and a cloudy day paired with the major cities of New York, London, and Sydney. But the fourth icon turns the concept on its head by showing an anime hero arriving to Tokyo on a cloud. It’s a great gag, and has wide appeal to fans of all things Japan, not just this specific anime character. Tokyo, the art seems to say, is just a little more interesting and special than the rest of the world. I love the way it presents the e ..read more

Threadless’s Bad Bird Aviary Club

Bad Bird Aviary Club by WGshop is my favorite Threadless print this week. I love the authentically vintage look of it, with a lot of realism in the illustration of the hawk (despite his fanciful accessory). There’s just enough roughness in the type to look a bit uneven and handcrafted, like something that might have been lettered by a sign painter. What sets this apart from a lot of retro-styled pieces is the sophistication of its choices. For instance, that dash of neon green ink gives the design a fresh and unusual feel. I also love the angle of the supporting text, which increases the visu ..read more
