Production systems for the luxury food and tobacco industries are complex, achieve very high throughput rates and often run 24/7. In order to ensure the products’ high quality, the Körber Business Area Technologies counts on seamless monitoring of the entire manufacturing process in the plant. This expectation also applies to the laser-based perforation systems that the company integrates into its lines. Based on Körber’s specifications, MKS developed a customized Ophir® OEMsensor to measure the laser power, which can be integrated directly into the equipment. For maintenance tasks, the plant ..read more

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? We have a family that’s larger than most families with six kids, so most of my activities outside of work involve them. We enjoy camping throughout the year, along with just being outside in nature. My two older boys and I ride motorcycles and we like to take as many rides as possible throughout the year. We’re also a musical family. I’ve enjoyed playing musical instruments most of my life, from the trombone in the marching band, bass guitar in jazz band, along with playing hair metal bass guitar in a garage band in high school, to now sitting around t ..read more

Watch: Managing Laser Degradation in Industrial Applications
Ophir Photonics Group – Laser Measurement
by OphirBlog
11M ago
Lasers are made of physical matter. Therefore, the natural degradation of their materials can cause variability in performance. Aging optics often cause slow changes in laser behavior and, when left unchecked, these changes can lead to loss of process efficiency. An unclean process environment can quickly change a laser’s behavior through thermal lensing, which is caused by debris collected on laser optics. In this webinar, produced by Photonics Media, John McCauley discusses how these variabilities are managed, what aspects of a laser’s performance should be analyzed, and what tools are avail ..read more

Understanding Dynamic Range…The Numbers Game
Ophir Photonics Group – Laser Measurement
by OphirBlog
1y ago
There is a fair amount of confusion caused by the reporting of dynamic range of beam profilers. The purpose of this blog post is to explain some of the terminology used in the discussion of this parameter by both Ophir- Spiricon and other suppliers of beam profilers. Definition Dynamic Range is the ratio of the largest measurable signal to the smallest measurable signal. The smallest measurable signal is typically defined as that equal to the noise level, or alternatively the “Noise Equivalent Exposure” or that point where the Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 1.   To measure a beam profile ..read more
