A Christmas Like No Other
The Life of a 20-Something With Lupus

When I was celebrating Christmas last year with my family and my future in-laws, I never imagined that just a few short months later, we’d be confined to our homes with a horrible virus bringing the world to its knees. As you can imagine, this is especially scary for those with autoimmune diseases. It’s especially scary for me knowing that I have an autoimmune disease as well as a partner working outside of our home on a daily basis. This past year has been a tricky one for me. In the early stages of the quarantine in March and April, I felt sad and lonely, even though my fiancé was home ever ..read more

When I look back at where I started and where I am now…it really is mind-boggling. Even though I had worked in customer service for so long, I knew that it wasn’t something I wanted to settle into for the rest of my career. I always knew that I wanted to do more. So I went back to school and took HR. It turns out that this was the right move for me, because working in this field is something that I thoroughly enjoy.   I have never learned more than I have in my current role as a policy consultant. I’ve learned about government legislation, various leaves and how they are administered (m ..read more

Working from home and staying indoors has definitely taken a toll on me. Don’t get me wrong-I enjoy working from home very much. However, what I’ve realized is that I’m a lot less active than I was when I was still commuting into the office. Going into the office means walking to the subway, taking the stairs, and navigating through a huge building until I reach my floor. I did my best to perform this task briskly so that I could get my heart rate up a bit. But now, all of that activity has decreased drastically. Getting a puppy has helped. I typically take Bosco for walks, usually around 20 ..read more

The other day, I received an email from Leapcure, a company that aims to expand the patient voice in clinical research. This amazing company was started to redesign the way researchers think about working with patients – to appreciate their hardships and their needs. Leapcure is currently working on Lupus clinical research study and would to hear some feedback from those who suffer from Lupus. I myself took the survey and it maybe took me a few minutes. A few minutes of your time can really help better understand the patient experience. The link to the lupus clinical study can be found by cli ..read more

At the beginning of this year, the rumblings of a respiratory disease outbreak began to emerge out of Wuhan, China. Little did we know that this disease would turn into a worldwide pandemic that would bring the world to its knees and force world leaders to take quick action to protect its residents.  We all watched the news in horror as cases of infections, hospitalizations, and deaths from COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by the Coronavirus, began to climb, seemingly with no end in sight. The public began to understand the severity of COVID-19 when schools, businesses, and pub ..read more

Coronavirus, Lupus, and Working From Home
The Life of a 20-Something With Lupus

The ability to work from home permanently is something I’ve always wanted. Being able to avoid the hustle and bustle of commuting downtown is especially ideal for someone with an autoimmune disease. The germs and bugs that the general population seems to be unmoved by can severely impact those with compromised immune systems.  It was back in March when my real concern for the coronavirus began. I was at my desk when one of my colleagues said that she was watching the news on her computer. It was just announced that schools would be closed until further notice due to COVID-19. At that poi ..read more

I was sitting at my desk the other day, waiting for my work laptop to reboot after a software update. While sitting at my desk, I checked my email on my phone and was met with a fantastic email. Healthline.com has named Flow on Lupus as one of the top Lupus blogs of 2020! I’m always so fascinated when I receive emails like this, especially when I think about when I started this blog several years back. I never imagined that anyone would ever read it. I had written in paper journals and diaries in the past and felt that an online “journal” would be ideal. I would often write in my journals unt ..read more

It has been such a long time since I’ve updated my blog. I have the day off today, so I thought I’d use it to write an update. Work has been ultra busy since the Coronavirus shutdown began. The number of requests that have been coming through has been quite overwhelming. I’m certainly not complaining, though, as I know that there are plenty of people who have had the misfortune of being laid off in the last several weeks. I quite enjoy working from home every day. I like being in my own space, cooking my lunches, and going for walks around my neighbourhood several times a day. In addition to ..read more
