Around 12:50 a.m. on Thursday, a resident of Bayswater Street in East Boston called 911 to ask if there was anybody who could say "happy birthday" to him. The BPD dispatcher went on the air and relayed his request to one particular A-7 cruiser, one of whose officers said he and his partner would answer the call, and wish him a happy birthday - in English and Spanish, even. Which they did, but only after stopping for a muffin and some candles to give the man. Yay, right? The project builds on work by MIT researchers who discovered that plain old concrete "doped" with carbon black - which formed the ink the Dead Sea Scrolls were written in - could be used to store and then deliver electricity. It turns out the c ..read more

Banner across Salem Street. Source. Some restaurant owners in the North End have thrown up banners in the neighborhood to get visitors to make reservations for outdoor dining via 311, which might confuse out of towners who don't know 311 doesn't handle restaurant reservations. As first noted by Politico, the banners are, indeed, generating calls and posts to 311, but not all of them back the restaurant owners, such as the one that included the photo above: Please remove banner. Please inform restaurant owners that diners don’t want to be involved in their petty infighting with the City of ..read more
