Why We Love Nancy Meyers’ Kitchens
Maria Killamer

Today I want to explore the enduring appeal of Nancy Meyers’ kitchen designs, as seen in iconic films like “Something’s Gotta Give” and “It’s Complicated.” These movies feature classic black and white kitchens that remain stylish and relevant over two decades later. And that, my friends is the very definition of TIMELESS. Back in 2010 I wrote a post that compared the beautiful and utterly timeless Nancy Meyers white and black kitchen in Something’s Gotta Give that my client had copied.  And it seems that lately everyone is talking about Nancy Meyers’ classic movies’ timeless decorating st ..read more

It’s my birthday TODAY! So I thought I’d share some of the things I’m loving lately! 1. My yellow-striped outdoor drapes The first are the new yellow and white striped outdoor drapes I just had custom made for the Patio. Since our hot tub is located directly off our primary bedroom, it feels more private when we come outside to use the tub.   Last year I bought all this patio furniture from Ballard Designs! I was overjoyed that it all came in MY yellow. Then was even happier when I discovered that they discontinued this colourway and the outdoor fabric that matched was on sale for $29 a y ..read more

Remember the days when our homes were private sanctuaries, the only people who saw inside of them were family and close friends? Before the era of social media, our living spaces were personal, tangible reflections of our lives, untouched by the ever-scrolling feed of digital validation. Now, I’m grateful to use my home as a learning tool, sharing its journey and transformation with the help of social media. My birthday is coming up this weekend. It’s the perfect cue for gratitude and reflection. Join me as I look back at my three previous homes and reflect on the makings of my colour busines ..read more

My heart is bursting following my live in-person True Colour Expert Training in Chicago! But first, it’s beginning to feel like summer! My outdoor furniture came out this week I just love all my boxwood clouds (I know about the blight but apparently these are green velvets which don’t catch it AND they are individually planted. Anyway, they sure are SO much friendlier and lush than a pile of jagged rocks, below (why do people do this?) Here’s the before just because it’s so dramatic: While I was in Chicago a week ago leading my Spring True Colour Expert Workshop, the sod in the pool area go ..read more

Why a Beige Kitchen is a Tricky Design Project
Maria Killamer

I know I’ve been declaring beige is back for awhile, but then it happened. An Instagram and TikTok celebrity/influencer shared about her renovation recently and all the things that went wrong. When I watched it I thought at first that she was generous to share what NO ONE would normally share.  But then I realized she sells fashion, not interior design. And that kind of video would simply generate even more shares from the people watching it. Someone shared it with me after all, so suddenly I too was looking at her bathing suits (not for me ).  Here’s how to know when a trend is peak ..read more

A Better Black for Exteriors

My eDesign department is hopping with exterior colour consultations this time of year. We help clients get the fresh updated look they want while making sure the colours relate to any fixed stone, brick and roof colours.  Because once you understand colour, it’s really easy to spot when someone wrongly assumed that their stone or brick was simply “neutral”. That means, the didn’t bother considering the undertones in the stone when they chose other neutrals. And that usually means it looks less than beautiful. Specific colour ways of brick and stone will typically only work with a very lim ..read more

This couple recently combined their belongings and decor, and asked for my help with a decorating plan. Instead of painting, I used some expert editing techniques (along with a few new pieces) to create a stunning makeover for their dining room.  And I’m also sharing one of my favourite ways to change up your dining set for a more luxe look. Barbara is a friend and client. I had decorated her home 8 years ago, after her husband passed away. Today I’m sharing how I transformed bleak, battleship grey institutional hallways with a happy colour palette and vibrant artwork. I think this post will brighten your day! After creating all kinds of love and happiness decorating five suites at Wilma’s Transition house (note: you can see all the before and after episodes over on my YouTube channel), we had just a couple days to address the bleak, institutional feel of the battleship grey hallway and common area. My amazing painter, Joe, from Bristle and Boss Painting dropped everything to come get it done ASAP before opening day. And my Direc ..read more

The Truth About the most Popular White Paint Colours
Maria Killamer

The best white exterior paint colours are not what you think! If you simply Google the best white paint colours, you’ll get a list of popular choices. However, these white paint colours will NOT look good on exteriors. Here’s why. In 2022 I posted an update to my Exterior Colour Selection Masterclass about how the black and white trend was taking over the planet, and this was the series of images I used inside one of the new modules. **By the way, if you already purchased my masterclass, you’ll have ongoing access to all the updates inside each trend.
