The Lantern and the Night Moths: Five Modern and Contemporary Chinese Poets in Translation

The Lantern and the Night Moths: Five Modern and Contemporary Chinese Poets in Translation is an outstanding read. For reasons that are discussed in the book itself, translator Yilin Wang, found themselves the center of attention after the British Museum used her work without permission or pay, and when asked to please address that, they responded in the most British Museum-ish way ever, by pulling not only the translation, but the original words of feminist poet Qiu Jin from their exhibit, symbolically silencing both the women that had made them look foolish. So, when Wang said that their tra ..read more

I Can’t Say No to the Lonely Girl, Volume 1

Ayaka is an excellent student, who has a hard time taking tests. In return for a recommendation from her teacher to any college she chooses, she finds herself responsible for bringing a truant classmate back to school. She doesn’t really know Honda, but how hard can that be? Well, when Honda demands a quid pro quo in the form of a “favor”- and the first favor turns out to be a kiss – it’s a bit complicated. My memory of this series in Comic Yuri Hime was “This was a sweet series, I’m glad it was licensed.” But, I had completely forgotten that the premise is kinda trashy, kinda funny. That sai ..read more

Comic Yuri Hime May 2024 (コミック百合姫2024年5月号)

We’re the beginning of of Q2, and Comic Yuri Hime May 2024 (コミック百合姫2024年5月号) has settled in for a lovely variety of Yuri manga – from the openly queer, to fantasy, to toxic relationships and a fair amount of goofy stuff in between. This issue begins with a new story, featuring a well-worn trope that…I don’t hate for some reason.  “Saborinara Houkenshitsu de Douzo? Despite the fact that I don’t utterly hate the “hot, young school doctor and student” trope, I am always reminded of my own school nurse who was a horrible person, incompetent, hated kids and thought we were all lying all the ti ..read more

Yuri Ranbou, which I reviewed earlier this month here on Okazu, is not the only Yuri-themed board game developed by Stromatosoft. Here is Sisters of Dangerous Yuri Council, (ヤバ百合会の妹たち/ YabaYurikai no Imouto-tachi) an “Onee-sama-taking Yuri auction card game”! Set in classic Marimite-style Yuri world, it provides even more competitive gameplay (and more toxic Yuri) for up to five players. If this interests you, then please read on. General Information Players: 2-5 Time: 15 Min Age: 7+ (Difficulty-wise, not content-wise) In Sisters of Dangerous Yuri Council you become one of five ambitious first ..read more

Queer and Feminist Perspectives on Japanese Popular Cultures Symposium & Rainbow Book Fair Event Reports

I know I have been a bit spotty this month, but today’s post is, in part, the explanation of why. ^_^ First, I participated with my co-presenter Willow Nunez, on Yuri Cafe Anchor, at Queer and Feminist Perspectives on Japanese Popular Cultures Symposium. My very many thanks to Aurélie Petit and Megan Rose for all their hard work getting this together. There were three days of presentations, over multiple sessions, which tried to account for various time zones. Ultimately I as able to see many, but not all the presentations. The keynotes were outstanding and the presentations thought-provoking ..read more

Train To The End Of The World Anime

What makes good science fiction? This is a question that I have been asking a lot as I watch Train To The End Of The World, streaming now on Crunchyroll. In the near future, a young woman, Yoka, is scooped up by a famous Japanese sculpture of an owl and deposited in the middle of a huge gathering. She is clearly unwilling to be the center of so much attention, but is forced to click a giant “7G” button that will enable something something. As she hits the button, reality is scrambled and nothing on Earth is ever the same again. In a small, provincial town west of Tokyo, Yoka’s friends are now ..read more

An image of two girls sitting in a classroom. One holds a guitar and faces us, the other leans her head into her hands as she listens admiringly. Anyone who knows me know I adore the manga Sasayakuyouni Koi wo Utau, by Takeshima Eku. I feverishly told Kodansha USA about it and was absolutely over the moon when they licensed it. Volume 1-8 are available in English and I heartily recommend them. Let me tell you why as I discuss the anime Whisper Me A Love Song, based upon this manga, which is now streaming now on HIDIVE. When first-year high schooler Himari hears upperclassman Yori sing at the ..read more

Yuri Anime Today sees the streaming simulcast premiere of Whisper Me A Love Song on HIDIVE.  Okazu Correspondent Roxie took a grand tour of Tokyo & Kyoto this week finding marketing campaigns, collabs and goods for us, which we posted yesterday. Today she tells us that there is also a new pop-up shop at Gamers. She notes that the manga was sold out when she got there – and the floor was packed with a nice variety of age groups. Comic Natalie has a still in which Himari and Yori blush at one another – from the anime. Daryl Harding at Crunchyroll News has the details on Sound! Euphonium ..read more
