Our eagle-eyed readers will have noticed the number of brands included in our Exclusive Chinese Brands Guide steadily decline over the past month or so. We have indeed refreshed our Guide to reflect the constant streamlining of the Chinese market. We removed over 20 brands from our guide, including Dorcen, Green Wheel, Hanergy, Hanteng, Hunkt, Lifan, Long River, Maple, Qiantu, QYEV, Rox, Singulato, Sitech, Suda, Weltmeister (WM), Yema, Zedriv and Zinoro. The Skoda Fabia is the best-selling vehicle in Slovakia in February. It’s another very satisfying month for the Slovak new car market at +16.3% year-on-year in February to 7,702 units. This way, the year-to-date tally is up 17.5% to 15,637. Atop the brands ranking, both Skoda (+37.1%) and Hyundai (+23.5%) vasty outpace the market, with the latter reaching 10.8% share. The Daihatsu Sigra is the best-selling model in Indonesia for the 2nd month running. The new vehicle wholesales market in Indonesia dives -18.7% year-on-year in February to just 70,657 units, leading to a year-to-date volume off -22.5% to 140,274. Retail sales are down -16.3% to 70,291 and -15% year-to-date to 148,649. Wholesales-wise, brand leader Toyota (-13.9%) falls slower than the market to an improved 33.3% share, followed by Daihatsu also in good shape in context at -7.2% to 21.4% share. The Toyota Corolla Cross is the most popular vehicle in Colombia in February. The Colombian new vehicle market significantly slows down its fall in February at -1.3% to 15,612. The year-to-date tally is down -8.4% to 27,206. Toyota (+38.5%) goes completely against the market to post a splendid year-on-year gain and easily stay in first place with 17.2% share. Chinese sales data for the Lotus Eletre is now available. The Lunar New Year holidays falling in February this year instead of January in 2023, sales of new imported cars in China drop -40.6% year-on-year this month to just 32,951. However the two month total, reflecting the real evolution of the market, is down just -2% to 108,382, a solid performance for imports which usually are on a steeper downward trend. VW Passat sales are up 54.9% in February. Picture Martin Meiners. German new car sales edge up 5.4% year-on-year in February to 217,388 units. That’s the smallest lift among the Top 5 European markets. Year-to-date volumes are up 11.8% to 430,941. Note BEV sales drop -15.4% year-on-year to 27,479 and 12.6% share vs. 15.6% a year ago. MG sales in Europe are up 108.7% year-on-year in February. According to preliminary data from ACEA, the European market (EU+EFTA+UK) climbs up 10.2% per almost 100,000 sales year-on-year in February to 995,059 units. After two months, the cumulative volume is up 10.9% or nearly 200,000 units to 2,012,136. Among the Top 5 markets, the UK fares best at +14%, followed by France (+13%) and Italy (+12.8%).
