Time is a blur just now as I near the clocking off hour for my break away in the highlands so of course I am cramming in as much work as possible so I have money to come back to! This weekend I had two weddings sketcher bookings near St Andrews. A stunning part of the country and a lovely drive in the sunshine, even though I did do it four times in three days :) Congratulations Jemima & John and Emily and Daniel, and all those who tied the knot recently, I wish you all the very best. I love such happy occasions and seeing people so happy and enjoying a wonderful celebration fills my hea ..read more

Yesterday’s sketch was from the polling station as the nation took to the streets to vote on the General Election. And as we wake to see not only a change of leadership but also a change of weather I am feeling optimistic about the sunny summer ahead. A change is as good as a rest they say. This sketch is from a showery morning down by the harbour at Newhaven. Want to buy me a coffee ..read more

It’s amazing what a boost I get from drawing something I am pleased with, even after many years of doing this for a living. I like the drawing but also I like that I have documented a moment of my life, of family life and that I know when I look back in years to come I will remember this day. Looking through my sketch books from when the kids were little or when we were on holiday fill me with joy. Drawing a sketch pulls me into the moment more than taking a photo and the time it takes looking at the details of a scene somehow lodges more emotion into my memories. One of the best things about sketching at weddings is finding new locations around the country to draw, whether that be hidden castles and stately homes or coastal towns with stunning views. I had never been to Port Glasgow until this weekend and it is a lovely town on a hill overlooking the River Clyde just 20 miles from Glasgow centre. The town has an impressive past as the centre of ship building in the 19th Century and these huge steel sculptures of two shipbuilders hark back to those days. Created by sculptor John McKenna they look great shining in the sun and I had to make a detour to ..read more

Stepping out of the city

Ink lines and layers of green in the leaves above my head. I took a walk along the cycle path this morning and looked up to see the sun streaming through the leaves. The branches from both sides of the old railway path cross crossed above my head creating an archway of green. I listened to the birds and took deep breaths and for a moment I left the city. I wasn’t on the Roseburn Path, the one which is at the centre of so much talk just now as it is in danger of being turned into a small section of the expanding tram route. But I was not far away on another part of the old railway line which ..read more

I am sketching flags of the 24 nations who have qualified for this summers Euros football competition which is taking place in Germany just now. Here is Romania who had a great first match and Croatia and Italy below. Have a go at crosshatching the ripples in a piece of material, subtly fading from dark to light before any watercolour is added.
