It's been a while since I wrote about cryptocurrency and cryptoassets. The last time I did, they were flying high. In 2022, it subsequently crashed. Industry leader Bitcoin dropped 70% with other crypto projects dropping 80%, 90%, or more in value. It has been one of the more brutal “crypto winters” that investors and developers in this space have suffered through, and that's not even counting the FTX meltdown. Nobody knows when, or even if, crypto will soar again.
But if you think it's a great asset to hold for the long term, the end of 2022 (when I origina ..read more

We have been getting a lot of questions about the debt limit crisis in Washington and how it affects investments such as Treasury bonds, the TSP G Fund, and savings bonds like I bonds. I'm kind of surprised how many we're getting (you'll soon see why), but Josh, our content director, says I have to write a post about it. So, here's what to know about the debt limits and how they could affect your investments.
Why Is There a Debt Limit?
The first thing you need to understand is that this “debt limit” thing is completely artificial, and it could be chan ..read more

How can you spend $1,000 per month on groceries for a family of four?!?! That is a sentiment I have often heard, especially when I share my budget from when I was going gazelle speed in paying off my medical student loan debt. It might seem like such a small amount to many high earners. But during much of my upbringing, I was raised by a single mom on a teacher’s salary (roughly $3,000 per month at that time), so, relatively speaking, $1,000 per month on groceries seems like living a very comfortable life to me.
Even though I’ve gone from broke to financiall ..read more

One day in 2010, I approached my department chair to give my notice. I was working my first attending job as an anesthesiologist, and I wished to travel the world.
“I’ll stay until the end of the summer and then I’m leaving,” I said. There was a pause. “I understand. Where are you going?” he asked.
I didn’t know. I assured him the job was fine—plentiful vacation and nice people. I tolerated late-night C-sections, and I didn’t mind the commute—a quiet drive through rural New England, though I hit a turkey once. He survived.
But I missed my fellow trainees ..read more

FSKAX and FZROX are two popular funds offered by Fidelity. Both are low-cost mutual funds that invest in large-cap stocks. Both, by virtue of being index funds, are likely a good (and cheap!) place to invest your money. But there are some differences. If you’re having trouble choosing between FSKAX vs. FZROX, let's highlight some of the benefits of both funds.
What Is FSKAX?
The Fidelity Total Market Index Fund (FSKAX) is a low-cost mutual fund that holds nearly 4,000 stocks. It’s one of the largest funds in the world and is a good option for investors ..read more

One of the most enjoyable parts of my week is when Megan Ashriel comes back to work on Monday morning. You may not know Ashriel; she works behind the scenes here at WCI. One of her many tasks is managing the editor (at) whitecoatinvestor.com email box. It's a totally overwhelming job that I was glad to give up a couple of years ago. She forwards emails to the appropriate person on the WCI team to handle them.
Reader and listener questions get sent to me. I get a few every day, but since Megan doesn't work on weekends (Ashriel actually does sometimes but she ..read more

If you want to be wowed by technology and/or massively frightened because of it, ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence bot that has become wildly popular (at least among tech writers and journalists), is here to serve you.
As research firm OpenAI states, the purpose of the generative chatbot is to optimize “language models for dialogue” and to interact “in a conversational way” along with making it possible “to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.”
Forbes had said the bot is a gam ..read more
