I recently started going back and looking at some of my old race reviews for fun. Specifically, the marathons. I've finished 33 of them and they've all had their own story to go along with them. More often than not they've been pretty wild for any number of reasons....the breakfast guy at the hotel slept through his shift so we didn't have any coffee before the race (unacceptable) , I sliced the back of my heel open on a glass door and ended up in the ER (devastating), I ran through a deluge at Boston as a guide for a blind runner and we managed to finish (miraculous).   ..read more

hDROP WEARABLE HYDRATION SENSOR: YES or NO?
I am admittedly bad at hydration. For the amount of running that I do, I should be taking in significantly more fluids, both water and electrolyte enhanced drinks. And, well…I just don’t. For no good reason, honestly. I’m just not on top of it. And I don’t really get that thirsty. But I am one hundred percent sure that my training would improve enormously if I was better about staying hydrated in general and rehydrating post-run. Particularly in the summer when both the temperature and my mileage steadily cr ..read more

"Thank God I didn't look at the clock the whole race....if someone would have told me this morning that 3:56 doesn't make the team, I don't want to know that."
~ Nikki Hiltz, after winning the 1500 at the US Olympic trials
Checking my time. Running. Not racing.
When was the last time you raced with the goal being to beat as many people as you can as opposed to running a specific time? Last summer I was trying to get mentally fired up for a local 5k. It's not my favorite distance on account of how short it is. Put it this way, I'd rather do a half than 3.1 miles. &nb ..read more

As an athlete & a coach, I am always learning. Even at age 49 with 12 years of high school coaching & 33 marathons under my belt, I still find myself asking questions, trying new methods & seeking new solutions. As I begin training for my next marathon I plan to share the things I’m working on changing or improving in this cycle. And this is mainly for myself, yes, but with my athletes in mind. I’ll be working with my friend, fellow coach & mentor, Halston Taylor. Today, I'm launching my first in a monthly series (so, hopefully four of them) from June through race day in Octob ..read more

As you know, Boston was a bit of a shit show for me. I'm not going to go into detail. If you want to read that story, feel free. But, I will tell you that afterwords, I was pretty bummed about the way things had played out. I don't care how chill you are about your racing and results, even if you're one of those people who can claim you're "over it" after a bad race and play the whole "onwards and upwards" card, I don't believe you if you tell me there's not still a small part of you that's replaying the day in your head and wishing things had gone differently. "Music for me, is all about creating a feeling. I like all types of music and feel like they all have their moment in your life."
~ Will Noonan
Okay, so a few weeks ago I was reading this thread on, well, Threads between Des Linden and Kara Goucher. They were going back and forth about something funny, some smokin' hot basketball player from the 80s, I think? And three or four comments down, Will Noonan piped in with something hilarious. And it caught my attention because it was just freaking funny. So, naturally, I was curious about this guy who I knew ..read more

"I’m a fairly unemotional person day to day. Even keeled. Stoic. But once music is involved, that facade fades pretty fast and puts me straight into the song."
~ Laura Green
So her name is Laura Green. I'm guessing many of you are familiar with her. And if you're not, you should be. She's kind of big deal. But in a super unique way. Basically, she makes fun of running, runners (herself and others) and most things running related on a regular basis. And her posts, which incorporate this humor, are not only hilarious but, more often than not, are comp ..read more

"We got the dream team
We're feelin' wide awake
We got the dream team
We're goin' all the way"
~ 'Dreamteam', Galantis
It's been a minute since my last race review. Three months to be exact. I took some solid time off after my last big race, regrouped, spent some quality time with my family not worrying at all about training, and then I got back on the horse in January in preparation for Boston which is a mere nine weeks away. And that alone is kind of blowing my mind. But that's not for today. Sunday morning I headed up to Bedford, NH for the Super Sunday 4 ..read more

And so we push on, we being the Six Minute Mile crew and myself, with our quest for the perfect pair of headphones for active people, or more specifically in my case, for running. Next up on my list are Shokz Elite Bone Conduction Sport Headphones. Back in November, when I mentioned my headphone review project on IG and explained what I was looking for in this post, the clear choice by those who chose to comment was Shokz. Prior to test driving them recently, I had never tried this brand but had always been intrigued. So, this was the perfect time to test them out and, to my good f ..read more

I have been running with music since I was in grade school. I’ll go ahead and age myself here. I made mixtapes (they were awesome) and ran with my 5-pound Sony Walkman back then. Oh, how we have evolved in terms of music listening devices. I am now 48 years old and admittedly do not have a favorite pair of headphones. Meaning, I haven’t found that perfect mix of quality, sound, fit and so on in one single brand. And so begins my quest. Along with my friends over at Six Minute Mile, I will take the next few months to test out as many different kinds of headphones as I can. I currently own at l ..read more
