New Bookstore Alert! Big Red Books, Nyack NY
The Boston Bibliophile by Marie Cloutier

Big Red Books opened a couple of weekends ago, at 120 Main Street in Nyack, New York. Nyack is a nice town on the Hudson near the Tappen Zee Bridge, full of cute restaurants and shops, including lots of second hand and vintage stores. We go there now and then because it has a great quilt shop, The Quilt Tree, and it's close to Tarrytown, another fun town with shops and restaurants including its own indie bookstore, Transom Bookshop. Big Red is a cute store with a great indie-store selection and their opening day was filled with snacks and chatter. I don't believe they have a website ye ..read more

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Happy Labor Day to my U.S. readers. I'll be spending mine at home with my books. I'm about halfway through Heavy, by Kiese Laymon, his memoir written to his mother. It's been very heavily lauded and I can see why- emotional and beautifully written, about growing up and finding a place in the world. I started Melissa Broder's new book, Death Valley, which comes out in October. I got a galley from the publisher. It's about her father's impending death and grief and other related things. It's very surreal, more so than usual for this very visceral writer ..read more

Cape May Bookstores!
The Boston Bibliophile by Marie Cloutier

My husband and I took a little weekend getaway trip to the south Jersey community of Cape May and really had a great time on the beach and eating our way around the area. It's so beautiful down there. And of course we had to check out the bookstores. Cape Atlantic Book Company is a nice store on the second floor of a mini shopping mall in downtown Cape May. This is definitely the place you want to go to pick up your new beach reads. They had a great selection of hardcovers and paperbacks and tons of Colleen Hoover for what that's worth. Hooked on Books is a big crazy used bookstore l ..read more

Still on the same audio and nonfiction, but I'm treating myself to a re-read of a fairly recent favorite, Pushkin Hills, by Sergei Dovlatov. I realized I never properly reviewed it here, even though I was still blogging when I read it. It's a charming book about a writer frittering away his days as a tour guide at a Pushkin museum. Hilarious and sweet and full of memorable lines, it's a delight ..read more

Juniper Books and The Wheel of Time

So the other day my husband and I were watching a YouTuber who was talking about recent trends in fantasy writing (no idea who, sorry) and Jeff spied in the background this dude's truly epic Wheel of Time cover set. He tracked it down on Juniper Books, a site that is truly a bibliophile's delight, and within days the covers arrived at our house. Jeff got to work covering his books right away and even used special library-quality protective jackets to keep his new covers pristine. Are these incredible or what? Makes me want to read these books. Juniper has all kinds of sets- not just science f ..read more

Over at gilagreenwrites, Gila interviews poet Yoni Hammer-Kossoy about his debut The Book of Noah.  "One catalyst was actually COVID, where everyone had to build their own ark and ride out the storm, so to speak." In her latest episode of "What If? Why Not? How?" author Sally Wiener Grotta chatted with author and cantor Barbara Barnet about Deborah, the biblical "judge" and leader of the Israelites. As storytellers, they explored the original narrative in the Tanakh, and discussed what modern women can learn from a biblical woman of power and influence about being a female leader ..read more
