Employees today want more equitable workplaces, and they’re willing to leave their job to find an employer that offers what they’re looking for. Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet for creating an equitable workplace — it requires a multi-faceted approach. I’ve facilitated an HR roundtable in Cincinnati for 20-plus years. I first learned about the group when a flier—yes, an actual paper flier—arrived in the mail at my company. Back then, I was an HR department of one and was only aware of a small number of resources. So I decided to see what the group was all about.
The roundtable was a welcome forum where I could talk with other HR professionals about the challenges of working in human resources. I attended for a few months before the facilitator asked if I would like to step in and take ..read more

For Charlie Hatton, a U.S. military veteran who joined PSE&G as a project quality assurance/quality control specialist in 2015, showing how his military experience could transfer to a specific role was initially difficult.
“I applied for a job that I thought I was a good fit for, although I realized that the person screening the resumes might not agree because of my military background,” Hatton said. “It turned out I was right, and I didn’t get the interview.”
After that experience, Hatton reached out to PSEG’s Accelerated Mobility team. Launched in 2020, the program seeks to broaden the ..read more

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the research is clear: workers across generations and all walks of life need (and increasingly expect) supportive mental health resources in their workplaces to thrive. Unfortunately, many workers—particularly younger workers belonging to the generations entering and growing within our workforce right now--report that they aren’t getting the support they need, and that it’s negatively impacting both their work and home lives.

We’re hearing a lot lately about the disappointment and frustration of performance reviews. At Confirm, we run performance cycles for our customers every day.
We’ve learned that:
1. How we work isn't how we're measured
2. Employee performance follows a power law, not a bell curve
3. Calibrations make bad manager ratings worse
How we work isn’t how we’re measured
After World War I, industrial psychologist Walter Scott introduced a consistent rating scale for the U.S. military to evaluate recruits. In the 1920s, this model was brought into the workplace, and the manager review was born.
