QOTD: How Have Car Maintenance Costs Been For You?
The Truth About Cars
by Tim Healey
38m ago
Yesterday we reported on a Consumer Reports story listing the most expensive and least expensive car brands in terms of maintenance. This, plus a Wall Street Journal article from February that details the high cost of car ownership, have me curious. What has your experience been like? If you are a multi-car, multi-brand household, is one brand costing you more than the other? If you've been loyal to one brand, does the cost of ownership play a part? Did you switch from one brand to another and notice a difference? And so on, and so forth. You know the drill -- sound off below. [Image: J.J. G ..read more

2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Pricing and Specs Revealed
The Truth About Cars
by Matt Posky
3h ago
Toyota has released details on the Tacoma Hybrid, showing it will start at $47,795 as part of the TRD Sport trim. While that’s nearly $7,000 more than the gasoline variant of the TRD Sport, it does come equipped with the more powerful i-Force Max powertrain. That unit offers a combined total of 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, a significant improvement over the gasoline-only models. However, with a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, the 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp hybrid electric motor integrated into the 8-speed transmission may not offer that much more utility ..read more

The Truth About Cars
by Matthew Guy
3h ago
If yer looking for a midsize sedan with all-wheel drive, the list of choices is about to get smaller. Subaru has announced production of the Legacy will end early in the 2025 calendar. It was only a few days ago we brought news that the Exploding Galaxy brand was holding the line in terms of pricing for the Legacy headed into its 2025 model year, starting at an MSRP of $24,895. As one would expect, Subaru said its discontinuation reflects market shifts from passenger cars to high-riding SUVs and crossovers. It goes on to note its efforts of transition to electrified and fully electric vehicle ..read more

Porsche Gave the 2025 Cayenne GTS Better Performance and a Higher Price
The Truth About Cars
by Chris Teague
6h ago
There’s room for debate over whether the Cayenne saved Porsche, but it’s hard to deny the SUV’s impact on the performance automaker’s bottom line. The Cayenne has been available in dozens of configurations over the years, but the GTS has long been offered a solid balance of speed and luxury. Though it was absent for the 2024 model year, Porsche’s bringing it back for 2025 with a range of improvements over the outgoing SUV that make it even more compelling than before. The 2025 Cayenne GTS’ twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 is up to 493 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, increases of 40 ponies an ..read more

Counterfeit Valve Body Scandal Surfaces in the Aftermarket Parts World
The Truth About Cars
by Chris Teague
6h ago
Aftermarket car parts are a huge business, with hundreds of niche companies selling vehicle- and application- specific upgrades and merchandise. They can be pricey, though, and like anything expensive, there can be a dark side to the business. Broader Performance, a company manufacturing Ford transmission parts, recently found itself on the wrong end of that cycle, as it discovered a counterfeit of one of its products being sold on Summit Racing. Broader Performance’s owner, Jay Robarge, recently took to YouTube to discuss a valve body he discovered being sold under his company’s name. The ..read more

Rivian Will Give You a Discount to Trade In a Gas Vehicle for a New R1 Model
The Truth About Cars
by Chris Teague
8h ago
Rivian sells two compelling EVs that have garnered a good deal of happy customers, but they’re far from affordable. At around $70,000 to start, the brand’s R1T pickup and R1S SUV are out of reach for most buyers, even after the $3,750 federal tax credits for some models. The automaker is taking steps – small ones, to be fair – to make its vehicles more affordable, though, knocking up to $5,000 off some configurations. Oh, and you’ll have to trade in a gas vehicle to get the price cut. Buyers who take delivery of a new Rivian before June 30 can get up to $3,000 off the R1T Standard + Pack, $4 ..read more

Consumer Reports Lists Least/Most Expensive Car Brands to Maintain
The Truth About Cars
by Matt Posky
21h ago
With the average vehicle now older than ever before and fewer people capable of spending the kind of money required to purchase a brand-new automobile, maintenance has become even more relevant. To that end, Consumer Reports has furnished an analysis on just how much each nameplate is likely to set you back in terms of upkeep over its lifespan. That said, it would be irresponsible of us not to mention that the differences between individual models can be quite vast. A dud from a company offering below-average maintenance costs may very well outpace the typical vehicle from a brand that’s kno ..read more

QOTD: Will the Union's Volkswagen Victory Pave Way for More?
The Truth About Cars
by Tim Healey

Workers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, voted to unionize on Friday. But the UAW won't stop there. According to Reuters, next up for the UAW is a mid-May vote to unionize at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama. It might be a tougher fight for the union, since, as Reuters points out, Mercedes-Benz is being more anti-union than Volkswagen was. VW was pretty neutral, but MB is making anti-union arguments to its workers. On the other hand, the results at VW were pretty decisively pro-union. That could provide momentum to the UAW as it pushes to unionize other non-union plants t ..read more

Used Car of the Day: 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Wagon
The Truth About Cars
by Tim Healey
1d ago
Once again, our UCOTD is a wagon. What can we say, we love wagons. In this case, it's a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 wagon. Our seller says it runs well but has a little bit of rust. There also appears to a possible exhaust leak and the seller plans to install a new wiring harness. It looks like our seller has done a ton of work -- or paid to have it done -- recently. Work that includes a new throttle body, new brake pads, new belts and hoses, new air filter, and new plugs and wires. There's more, but it's too much to list here. This ride is based in New Hampshire and the asking price is $9,999 ..read more
