Let me just tell you all about it... We had been practicing our inferencing skills the past week and the bright idea came to me, what would be better than introducing our class elf than through a mystery box inferencing lesson of course!? First thing I did was find my mystery box and put our elf inside with his letter from the North Pole. Then I created 4 clues to describe our elf to use for the mystery box act ..read more

Getting Guided Reading Ready
For the Love of First Grade
by Mrs. Griffith

Going into the new school year I always set one goal for myself.  Last year, my goal was to thoughtfully plan out, record and track my guided reading lessons. I know that sounds A W F U L to say that I didn't already do that, but it's true...I didn't.  I knew what I did worked, I just needed a way to organize it! Let me just say, they worked beautifully! I check out books from our fabulous literacy library and go through them to see what I want to work on with my groups. I record what we will do before, during and after reading. On the days we do word work, I can choose what skil ..read more

A Day in the Arctic: Room Transformation
For the Love of First Grade
by Mrs. Griffith

This week we spend a day in the arctic. We've been studying habitats, animal characteristics and even started our own research projects. But we took a day off to explore artic-ish things! So grab your cold weather gear and get ready to explore. To transform the room, I used lots of paper, snowflakes and a little sparkle. I covered my door in paper and made a sign. I also covered the word wall and window with sheets of "ice" and "icicles".  I also ordered a few items on Amazon. I hung sparkle snowflakes from the ceiling, snowflake banner on our SmartBoard and snowflake cut outs on ..read more

This Book is Important
For the Love of First Grade
by Mrs. Griffith

Teaching main idea to first graders is hard. Here's a book I stumbled upon that made the concept so much easier for my kids to understand. The Important Book takes one "thing" and tells what makes it important. It also lists details to describe it too. It then tells again why it is important...much like main idea! To start off, my students and I completed 2 pages out of the book together, discussing what was the most important part (the main idea) and how we knew that (the details). I made color copies of the pages in the book, because who has 5 copies of their teaching books!? I put my k ..read more
