Bergen - Flam boat tickets

We are spending several weeks in Norway in late September to early October. Near the end of the trip we need to travel from Bergen to Oslo. Our plan is to Sognefjord version of the Nutshell. The first part is a boat from Bergen to Flam. We will overnight in Flam, then take a train Flam - Myrdal and Myrdal - Bergen.
My question is about buying boat tickets for the Bergen - Flam boat. We will be taking the boat on a Friday early in October. I gather this is "public transportation" but used mostly by tourists. Do we need to buy the boat tickets way ahead? It would be nice to be able to buy the tickets a few days ahead when we know whether the weather will be good. If it is horrid, it might be better to just take the train to Oslo.
Also, should we buy the train tickets well ahead? I gather they are available about 60 days ahead.
