Croatia to….fly out of Zurich

I am working on my itinerary to get from Split to Zurich. I have 6 days to plan. I am flying out of Zurich. I have a couple of thoughts but thought I would ask if anyone has some experience or thoughts. I won’t have a car.

One of my thoughts is to ferry to Venice and train to Zurich. I have been to Venice twice. Would love a different suggestion.

Last year I was in Switzerland so I feel I would like to explore a different place.

There is no ferry from Split to Venice. You can go to Ancona from there, but to go to Venice you wpykd have to go north to Pula, Porec or Rovinj to catch a catamaran.

There are non stop flights from Dubrovnik to Zurich. Maybe go there for a couple of days then to Zurich the day before your flight home?

You can easilxy go by catamaran (even partly by slow ferry) from Zadar to Venice with at least one ferry change. check

Non stop flights from Dubrovnik to Basel are usually cheaper than those to Zurich.
Easyjet has usually cheap Saturday (very late evening) flights from Dubrovnik to Venice.

Sounds like minimal fun - - the ferry leaves 730pm and arrives Ancona at 7am. And then you are in Ancona.

Skyscanner to the rescue: if you specify non-stop flights only from Split to "everywhere" (you can select a specific day or an entire month) it will show you all possible destinations for your day(s) of travel. I would pick a destination based upon a combination of interest, eventual route to Zurich, and a convenient flight schedule (6am flights are a rule-out for me, as are 11pm arrivals - - I would pick a destination where you can get a flight at a decent hour, like noon). You are sure to find something enticing! www.skyscanner.net

Neckervd, I did t know that Krilo has this Zadar to Pula service. Very handy! That would be a nice way to progress up to Venice, with stops.

thanks for all the great information.

What is everyone’s opinion on Zadar? I have an itinerary of sorts till Split and then …still have about 7 days.

Also, does 3 days in Split sound about right? I read someone’s post that said it was only worth one day(!). My plan is to do Trogir day trip. Any suggestions or insights? Appreciate them all.

I live near Ancona, and feel obliged to defend that underrated city. I don't know what interests you, but there are several nearby seaside locations where you could spend a few pleasant days. There are also many charming hill towns in the interior.

There are fast Frecciarossa trains from Ancona to Bologna, and there are direct flights from Bologna to Zurich.

We visited Split last year, taking the overnight ferry from Ancona. In my opinion it was a lot more fun than a four-hour daytime ferry from Venice, that doesn't go anywhere near Split. We had a decent dinner on the ferry, we had a comfortable cabin with bath, and a good Italian breakfast in the morning.

We enjoyed our time in Split. The old city, built into the enormous palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, is worth a few days. There are some lovely walks in a park overlooking the sea. You can visit ruins of the ancient Roman Salona, capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, on the outskirts of Split. We took a ferry to the beautiful island of Hvar, and we visited the city of Šibenik by bus There were other boat and bus trips available that we didn't have time for.

Yup! I took it last year, but in reverse from Pula to Zadar.

To the OP, re: Zadar. Glad I went, but do not need to return. I was there on a weekend, though, and got turned off by the crowds (and "influencers") - especiallyaround the sea organ and sun installation. If I were to return, it would be in shoulder season and earlier in the week. The Roman areas outside were a bit underwhelming but the archeological museum was fascinating.

The whole area between Marche and Veneto is one big open air museum: Loreto Sanctuary, Conero Beaches, Frasassi caves, old city of Ancona with the Regional Museum, Pesaro, San Leo, San Marino, Classe, Ravenna, Ferrara, Chioggia....
But I would rather explore the area around Split: Trogir (1/2 day); Islands of Brac, Hvar, Vis, Korcula; Krka Falls Park and Sibenik,
You may also visit Plitvice and Zagreb and reach Zurich from there by train (Intercities during the day, overnight train with sleeping car).
Or stop over in Slovenia and vist the caves of Skocian or Postojna, the stud at Lipizza close to Trieste; the scenic Venetian cities of Pula, Porec, Piran; the WW1 battlefields and historic museums in the scenic Soca (Isonzo) Valley, Lake Bled........

re: Zadar Thank you. I might do it as a day trip. I would like to see some of the sights, but not enough (I think) for a few days.
