Santa Monica: The Proper or Oceana

This may be too specific of a question, but worth a shot. We are planning to spend several nights in santa Monica in July. We stayed at Shutters once and I wasn't wowed and for the number of nights we are staying and our need for a suite it just doesnt seem worth it. We are considering the proper or oceana. I am looking for luxury but also for quiet. While I know that The proper is a few blocks away from the center of the action, the reviews seem to indicate a noise problem- street noise and rooftop bar noise. Oceana, which is closer to the action, seems to get reviews stating it's pretty quiet. Overall, my DH will like The Proper better with it's rooftop pool, but Oceana looks nice too. But again, most importantly I want a good night's sleep. Any thoughts are appreciated. TIA!

I can't think of anywhere in Santa Monica that I would call quiet. But, then, Santa Monica in July wouldn't be my first choice. But if it must be SM, I'd probably pick Oceana for its fairly recent renovation and distance from most of the busy/noisy/traffic areas of SM.

Hopefully, you're not going to be there anywhere near the 4th. And, obviously, weekends are noisier than mid-week.

Hi, I don't think Oceana is close to any action. Most car traffic from downtown on Ocean Ave would go down the ramp for PCH. There is nothing in the area to attract partygoers (the closest busy place being the Fairmont). That part of Palissades park is more for locals to enjoy an evening stroll, walk the dog or have picnic.
the Proper is close to Wilshire, very busy traffic.
that being said, I have never been in SM in July/August. Will try this year!
