Driving amalfi coast

Hi
Staying in Positano at an AirBNB with parking because we are driving from Naples on our way in and to Rome on our way out. Was thinking about a day trip by car versus a driver. Reading the forums there is advice all over the place of those that enjoy it and those that didn't. For those that did enjoy it, do you have an itinerary to suggest and places to stop? We are versed at parallel parking and tight spots. Thanks in advance.

Last summer, a restriction was placed on driving the Amalfi Coast road. Visitors' cars with license plates with even numbers could be on the road only on even-numbered calendar days, odd-numbered plates on odd-numbered days. I assume this restriction is continuing this summer season (although you don't say when you're going). You should investigate this as it relates to renters/hotel guests, and investigate not just through your AirBnB host but also official sources.

Putting aside the access issue, whether a day trip by car would be enjoyable depends quite a bit on when you're there and where you're going. (Where would you be going that you couldn't reach by public transportation?) In high season, parking is always a problem... not parallel parking and tight spots, but actual parking availability. I don't know whether the coast road access restrictions have convinced enough visitors to come without cars, but any car not allowed on the road on any given day will have to be parked somewhere.

We have driven the coast road a few times... many years ago (1980s, 1990s) in shoulder season. There was little to no traffic, and we had a lovely time, although my husband (the driver) said he didn't get much out of the views because he had to focus on the road. We wouldn't do this drive now except perhaps in the off-off season (winter). Bumper-to-bumper, slow-moving traffic does not say "vacation" to us, no matter what the views are like.

We stayed in Positano in the off-season and didn't have trouble driving on the coast. We are, however, used to driving winding coastal roads. We did a day trip to Amalfi and Ravello which we enjoyed. Given everything we've heard about driving and parking during the summer, I don't think we would have done the day trip if we were visiting at that time.
