Car Rental Questions - Yucatan/Cancun
Hello All,
I am flying into Cancun and planning to rent a car for 18 days to tour around Yucatan. I am mostly interested in visiting archeological sites around the Yucatan peninsula and may be spend couple of days one of the beach resorts depending the seaweed situation.
There have been a lot of scary stories about car rental places. Also, the insurance terms are a little confusing. After looking at the reviews, I narrowed down to a few car rental agencies:
Any other things that I should keep in mind while renting? Any other rental agencies that I should consider?
Thanks.

Have you considereds skipping Cancun completely? Depending on which sites you want to see, Merida is near Uxmal, Villahermosa is near Palenque, Chetumal is convenient to Bacalar Lagoon and Calakmul. The road from Cancun to Chetumal was pretty rough IIRC. They all have airports and rental agencies.

The only thing is that airfares to Cancun are usually a lot more competitive than to Merida or Cozumel. There's just a ton more flights and it's almost entirely a leisure market, and that usually keeps fares lower.

Don't forget, the most famous site, Chichen Itza, is located between Cancun and Merida. I'd suggest staying overnight in Valladolid, then taking a shuttle to Chichen Itza next morning, or, if the shuttle starts too late for you, take a taxi. This way, you avoid the terribly congested parking at Chichen Itza. I did a trip similar to yours a number of years ago, starting in Cancun, driving to Merida, then south to Palenque, westerly to Calakmul, northerly to Tulum and turned in the car back in Cancun, with several extra stops along the way. By the way, if you do take that taxi, agree on a price BEFORE getting in the car, to avoid being gouged at the destination. Buen viaje.
