Can I change name on United Airlines ticket
I have a situation where I need to change the name on a United Airlines ticket. My friend, who was initially planning to travel, can no longer make it, and I want to take their place. However, the ticket is under their name. Has anyone here gone through a similar experience with United Airlines? How did you manage to change the name on the ticket? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I doubt it, unless it's been less than 24 hours since the ticket was booked.
The ticket will probably need to be cancelled and rebooked under the new name.
I lost $ on a ticket for this very reason years ago when my sister bailed on a non-refundable trip I'd booked for her.
If the ticket is refundable, you're in luck, otherwise probably not.
They might agree to issue a voucher, but it too will be under the same name as the ticket that was booked.

I ran into similar situation, also on United - but it involved merely adding myths middle name to ticket to match GE/TSA Precheck. No go/no way said United unless they re-issued ticket. They were able to and waived the change fee.

Welcome to Fodors. This isn't a 'name change' - that would be when the ticket says Leslie Jones and it should be Lesley Jones. What you want to do is get the ticket re-issued for a different person. United Tickets are not transferable. The first ticket must be cancelled if the original passenger won't be using it. Depending on the type of ticket they will get either a refund, future flight credit, or nothing. You can go ahead and book a ticket on your own - at whatever the current fare is.
