10 days in Sicily (August)

I'm still deciding if I should buy the international flight tickets with my husband to go to Sicily this August. I love the ambience of the towns, the historical sites, and the beach. I know time is running out but there has been a lot of advice against Sicily in August because of the heat, closed restaurants and lots of crowds, etc. Is it really better to avoid Sicily in August? Are there any other suggestions for cooler places in Italy this August?

How many times have you been to Siclly? Where are you thinking of visiting on the islalnd? I never imagine restaurants to be closed in August in Sicily....what hae you been reading?

When you say "cooler" do you mean mountain resorts, or places that are "cooler" in the sense of hip/trendy, etc???

How much of a priority are beaches?

Myself, I would never go anywhere near a coastal resort in Italy in August especially after the 15th.

Might y ou consider an inland place with a lovely pool and pretty landscape?

You are very late to be thinking of booking at any resort in August, at a well-considered hotel. they are probably already full.

What have been your previous visits to Italy? Where have you liked? I would just forget the second 2 seeks of august and in any case you will likly not be able to get reservations during that time.

YOu want a resosrt with beaches? Or an inland farm hotel with pool???

Thanks for your reply. I'd like to go to some small towns/villages and scenic places. The street scenes attract me. I like the vibrant. colourful streets and the vibe of different parts in Sicily. There are different elements in Sicily (e..g historical ruins, villas, beach view etc). Beach is not a very top priority but we'd love to feel it as the coastal area is one of the main attractions. I haven't been to Sicily before so I am open to other choices in Italy. Do you have other suggestions? I may not be able to put in words clearly. Just my impression of Sicily by looking at pictures and descriptions. That said, I may be affected by pictures/blogs.

As to cooler places, I mean the temperature. I've also checked Lake Como. But is it also too late for me to book the accommodations?

My husband doesn't like the heat.. and he suggests Switzerland plus northern Italy. However, we only have 10 days. Not sure if we can cover that much. We prefer some quiet, relaxing places with some character. It seems that Sicily in August doesn't fit?

You will be boilling hot and the Sicilian coastal places will be jam packed in August. But you could find a small B&B slilgihtly inland and drive to the coast if you really are set on Sicily. I can recommend some.

At this point I think it will be about where you can get reservations for August. IF I were going at that time, I might look at some of the towns on the western Ligurian coast...I loved Camogli but there are other towns on that stretch of coast. NOT the Ciinque Terre, though.

And yes, Lake Como. You could easily combine Lake Como with a town on the Ligurian coast; we did that once.

What kind of hotel budget do you have?

If you really want a local feel, I'd also look at the Region of Abruzzo which has mountains, beaches, and few foreign tourists. The nearby town of Senigalia in Le Marche is marvelous.....it has everything you mentioned. And you can drive inland to mountains....take a look at that town.....it also has one of the best fish restaurants in Italy. (well, really 2 top rated restaurants but we liked Uliassi best) It's a GREAT town. From there we drove to Ascoli Piceno, inland but within reach of the coast.

Your best bet might be finding a great B&B inland and drive to the beach....you can get the chairs and umbrellas for rent.

Another dreamy place is Maratea but you would stay inland and again, drive to the beach.

I've not been to Swwitzerland in about 40 years so no idea but if I did go, I'd look at Ticino.

And then there are the Dolomites, but no beaches. But cool temperatures and great food...and scenery, of course.
