WATCH: JOHN AND THE HOLE Debuts Chilling First Trailer

IFC Films recently released the trailer for their highly anticipated thriller John and the Hole. The dark drama tells the story of a boy treading the liminal space between childhood and growing up.
The film’s lead is Charlie Shotwell (The Nest) who plays the film’s title character. John is a quiet kid who has concerns about transitioning into adulthood. The trailer is partially narrated by his mother, played by Jennifer Ehle fresh out of the excellent A24 joint Saint Maud. She expresses deep concern about her son’s demeanor, and with good reason.
Genre favorites Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Taissa Farmiga (The Nun) round out the rest of the wealthy nuclear family. Even from the trailer, it’s clear that this ensemble is delivering excellent performances across the board.
John and the Hole is written by Academy Award-winner Nicolás Giacobone (Birdman) and is based on his short story “El Pozo.” The film happens to be the directorial debut of filmmaker Pascual Sisto who hails from the world of visual art. The film itself looks stunning, each shot of the trailer delivers an unnerving quality that’ll leave you wanting to know more. We Need to Talk About Kevin vibes.

The film had its World Premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival where it accumulated a considerable amount of buzz. Much of the film’s acclaim concerns Sisto’s direction and the performance of its young lead.
John and the Hole will be unveiled in theaters and Video on Demand on August 6.
Synopsis
In this enigmatic and unsettling meditation on adolescent angst, 13-year-old John (Charlie Shotwell) discovers an unfinished bunker while exploring the neighbouring woods—a deep hole in the ground. Seemingly without provocation, he drugs his affluent parents (Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Ehle) and older sister (Taissa Farmiga), holding them captive within the bunker. As they anxiously wait for John to free them from the hole, the boy returns home, where he can finally enjoy and explore a newfound independence.
